Amid the green high-altitude hills of Thika in Kiambu County, Kenya, lies the historic Chania Bridge Estate (also known as Chania Estate). Founded in 1926 by the Harries family, the farm has preserved its tradition, sustainability, and commitment to quality for generations. Today, it is managed by Boyce Harries, the great-grandson of the founder, who continues the family legacy.

The name Chania Bridge refers to the nearby Chania River, which flows into the Athi River – one of Kenya’s longest rivers, running all the way to the Indian Ocean. The farm is situated at 1,550 meters above sea level and spans 73 hectares of fertile red volcanic soil. These conditions create outstanding Arabica with a complex flavor profile.

The farm is operated by a small but experienced team – five permanent staff members and seasonal workers during harvests. The main harvest takes place from October to December, with a smaller “fly crop” from May to July.

The principal varieties grown are the traditional Kenyan cultivars SL28 and SL34 (about 80% of production). The remaining 20% consists of newer varieties – Ruiru 11, Batian, and K7 – which are more resistant to diseases and climate change.

All harvesting is done exclusively by hand, with only fully ripe, red cherries being picked. During dry periods, irrigation is used to ensure healthy trees and consistent quality.

All processing takes place on the estate’s own wet mill:

  • Hand-sorting of freshly harvested cherries

  • Pulping and transfer to fermentation tanks, where fermentation lasts around 14 hours depending on temperature

  • Washing in channels with progressively cleaner water to remove mucilage

  • Drying on raised African beds for 12–20 days, with shade nets used during the hottest hours to preserve delicate flavors

Chania Bridge Estate is actively engaged in supporting the local community: it contributes to school construction, employs local workers, and invests in infrastructure development.

In addition to coffee, the estate also grows maize, beans, and macadamia nuts, and produces dairy. This diversified approach strengthens local food security while enhancing the farm’s own economic resilience.
