Producer Story

The Western Province of Rwanda, specifically the Nyamasheke District, is home to some of the country’s finest washed coffees. It is here, in the Macuba sector, that the Birembo washing station has been operating since 2013. While the station itself sits at an altitude of 1,503 meters above sea level, the coffee trees from which this particular lot comes grow on the surrounding hills at even higher elevations—above 1,700 meters

Community and commitment to quality
The station is managed by Mr. Habinshuti Oreste, and under his supervision around 503 smallholder farmers from the surrounding area process their harvest here. These farmers grow the traditional Red Bourbon variety, which is typical for Rwanda and gives the coffee its characteristic sweetness and full body. Thanks to the support of the station’s owner (C. Dorman Rwanda) and certifications such as Rainforest Alliance, farmers have access to regular training and agronomic support, which is directly reflected in the quality in the cup.

Precise washed processing
At Birembo, nothing is left to chance. During the harvest, which in this area typically begins at the end of February, the station employs up to 70 workers. The coffee is processed using the fully washed method. After pulping, the beans undergo fermentation in tanks for 12–15 hours. They are then dried on one of 132 raised African beds, where they are carefully hand-sorted until they reach optimal moisture content.
