A Ugandan Gem: The Coffee Gardens – Nafuna Lot

This lot is named after Jackie Nafuna, who not only grows coffee on her own farm but also plays a key role within The Coffee Garden by supporting fellow farmers in coffee cultivation and farm management.

The Nafuna lot showcases the very best of eastern Uganda and the majestic extinct volcano, Mount Elgon. It is produced as part of The Coffee Gardens project, which focuses on exceptional specialty coffee while maintaining complete transparency, fairness, and environmental responsibility. Coffee trees grow on steep volcanic slopes at elevations of approximately 1,800–2,200 metres above sea level, shaded by banana trees and native rainforest species.

Thanks to the ideal high-altitude microclimate, the coffee cherries ripen slowly, allowing the beans to develop remarkable sweetness and complexity. The coffee is made primarily from locally adapted varieties such as SL14, SL28, and the traditional Nyasaland variety.

A Project That Transforms Communities

The Coffee Gardens is redefining the coffee trade in the region. It works directly with hundreds of small family farms from surrounding villages, building long-term partnerships rather than simply purchasing coffee. Farmers receive comprehensive training in sustainable agricultural practices, soil conservation, and environmentally responsible coffee cultivation.

The project was founded and is led by Czech native Dana Siedem and her husband, Shake. Dana has spent many years working in coffee, including time in Ethiopia, and now applies her knowledge and experience in Uganda. Together, they demonstrate that genuine commitment can significantly improve both coffee quality and the quality of life for the farming families behind it.

Transparency and financial security are at the heart of The Coffee Gardens. Farmers receive prices well above the local average for perfectly ripe cherries and earn additional quality premiums throughout the season based on the final cup quality. The project also creates employment for many local women and men at the processing station, contributing to the economic development of the entire region.

Meticulous Processing

The Nafuna lot is a perfect example of what coffee can become when every step of processing is carried out with exceptional care.

  • Selective Harvesting: Only perfectly ripe, deep-red cherries are accepted during harvest.
  • Sorting and Selection: Upon arrival at the processing station, the cherries undergo flotation sorting, where underripe and defective cherries float to the surface and are removed. This is followed by another rigorous hand-sorting process.
  • Precise Processing: Depending on the processing method—most commonly an expertly executed washed process—the cherries are carefully depulped and fermented in clean tanks to remove the remaining fruit mucilage.
  • Slow Drying: The beans are dried on raised African beds, where they are turned continuously. During the hottest part of the day and overnight, the beds are covered with protective mesh to ensure slow, even drying, preserving stability and clarity in the cup.

The result of this extraordinary level of care is a crystal-clear, vibrant coffee that proudly showcases the exceptional potential of Ugandan specialty coffee.
