Product detailed description

Roaster’s comment:“I first visited the La Bolsa farm in 2019, and I’m very happy that even after all these years, we’re still able to offer their coffee. Although La Bolsa is a large farm, this allows it to support the families of all its workers, including the children, who attend their own school as part of compulsory education. This coffee has a much greater significance than just the flavor in the cup!”

La Bolsa Farm is run by the original founder’s grandchildren, Renardo and María. La Bolsa, which translates to “pocket,” got its name from its location: the farm “sits” in a valley and is shaped like a pocket. Although the farm covers more than 200 hectares, Renardo and María know every corner of it, and in 2019 they gave us a tour, showing us not only the farm itself but also the processing facilities and, above all, the huge beneficio where the coffee is dried.

And since such a large farm also needs a lot of employees, it has its own school and preschool, a health clinic, and a community kitchen. The team of permanent employees takes great care of the seasonal pickers, because there is a shortage of them in Guatemala, and pickers choose to work there not only based on the pay—which is above average at La Bolsa—but also on how much their children will enjoy it there. The vast majority return to La Bolsa regularly and stay for the entire harvest.

Our lot is a selection of Caturra and Bourbon varieties that underwent classic washed processing, including about a kilometer of tumbling in concrete troughs before they reached the drying area. Drying took roughly 16 days, with regular turning and covering overnight. The result is a beautifully sweet coffee that, especially when brewed as an espresso, impresses with its nice body and very pleasant aftertaste.
